The circuit bench of Sindh High Court at Hyderabad comprising Justice Faisal Arab on Monday issued notices to Chief Secretary Sindh, Secretary Law, Chairman and Secretary Board of Colleges asking them to file comments in a petition challenging the extensions given to the principal of Jinnah Law College.
Filed by teachers of the college, it is the second such constitutional petition against Aftab Ahmad Shaikh who is working as principal for the last 14 years even after his retirement in 1998.
Seven assistant professors including Ashfaque Ahmed, Erum Ahmed, Manzoorul Haq Ansari and Ahmed Raza have filed the petition. Earlier, a lecturer advocate Bilawal Ali Ghunio took Shaikh to the court in December last year.
Shaikh also served as Hyderabad’s mayor from 1987-1992. He was elected to the national assembly in 1988 and became a senator in 1994. He retained his position as principal during his term as mayor and his tenure in parliament. He took over as principal in 1979.
The petitioners maintained that the previous extension given to Shaikh lapsed on February 17, 2011. But he was again given a new tenure by the secretary law.
