Law and order: Two killed in shooting at court

Attackers tell police they were paid to kill Qureshi.

A former union council nazim and a passerby have died from injuries suffered in a shootout at Jhang district courts on Monday.


Abdul Qadir Pathan, one of the people who attacked the former nazim, Waris Shah Qureshi, was also injured when Qaiser Shah, a bodyguard accompanying the deceased, as he stepped out of the court premises. Pathan was arrested by a police team from the scene. Later, his accomplice, Nauman Khan Pathan, was caught by Kotwali police trying to flee the city.

The suspects, natives of Charsadda, told police that they had been paid for the task by Sher Daraaj, whose family has a land dispute with Qureshi’s family.

The suspects opened fire at Qureshi, a resident of Mallohana Mor, while he was leaving the court after attending a hearing of the case. Guard Qaiser Shah, the complainant in the FIR, said the suspects intercepted them near Katchery Chowk. He said the attackers opened indiscriminate fire, injuring Qureshi and a passerby, identified as Jamshaid, 17. They were taken to Jhang district headquarters (DHQ) hospital where they died. Jamshaid was headed for a nearby National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) office, police said.

Shah said one of the attackers, Adbul Qadir, was injured when he fired back. He was arrested from the scene and his accomplice, Nauman Pathan, caught trying to flee the city.

District Police Officer Rao Abdul Karim told the media Sher Daraaj, allegeldly behind the killing, was currently in Dubai.


The DPO said police officials in the area had been directed to stay vigilant to prevent a violent fallout of the killing.

Lawyer killed

A lawyer was shot and killed by unidentified attackers on Canal Road in Jaranwala on Monday. Advocate Akbar Awan, a resident of Chak 86-GB, was intercepted by the attackers while he was on his way to tehsil courts.

Jaranwala police have sent the body for an autopsy.

A protest demonstration was later organised against the killing by members of the Jaranwala Bar Association. The protesters demanded immediate arrest of the suspects. They announced to boycott court work until the suspects was arrested.

They chanted slogans against the police for its failure to check the rising crime rate in the area.

The protesters also demanded a high level inquiry against Jaranwala police station officials for their failure to control law and order situation.
