Honour crime: Woman killed, husband injured, ‘by her brothers’

Couple had returned to village a week ago at their parents’ request.

HASILPUR:
A woman was shot and killed and her husband injured in Hasilpur on Sunday. The two had married without their families’ permission.

Luddan police’s investigation officer Zahid Hussain told The Express Tribune that a case had been registered against Murtaza and Mustafa, brothers of deceased Ashraf Bibi, residents of Moza Bhindi Sallool village, and five unidentified suspects. They said raiding teams had been formed to visit nearby villages to arrest the suspects.

They said Sajjad, husband of the deceased, was taken to Vehari district headquarters (DHQ) hospital where doctors referred him to Nishter Hospital in Multan. Doctors who treated him at the DHQ hospital described his condition as critical. They said he was referred to Nishter Hospital because it was better equipped.

Complainant Rab Nawaz, father of the woman, said the couple had fled the village five months ago and got married in a court. He said they had returned only a week ago on request of Sajjad’s father. “He had discussed the matter with me and convinced me to bless the couple,” he said. Nawaz said he had agreed to accept their marriage but his sons had not agreed.

“They said they would not let the couple return to the village as they would then be  humiliated by people in the neighbourhood,” he said. On Sunday, the complainant said, the two brothers attacked the couple at their house, killing Ashraf Bibi on the spot and injuring Sajjad.

Asghar, a neighbour who took Sajjad to hospital, said he had rushed to Sajjad’s house on hearing gunshots. He said when he reached the scene Ashraf Bibi had already died.

Killed ‘by husband’

In another incident in Faisalabad, a woman was killed allegedly by her husband in the area of Millat Town police station. According to the FIR registered in the case, Complainant Ajmal Ali, father of the deceased, said Sajida Bibi was choked to death by her husband, Shakeel Ahmad, a resident of Ghaziabad and collusion with his mother and sister.
