The Postgraduate Medical Institute (PGMI) is planning to seek autonomy from the University of the Health Sciences (UHS), PGMI Principal Dr Tariq Salahuddin said on Thursday.
He said as soon as the decision was taken, classes would be started in the newly nominated Amiruddin Medical College under the PGMI.
Dr Salahuddin was addressing a press conference at the Lahore General Hospital (LGH) to conclude a two-day symposium.
Dr Salahuddin said that the PGMI was set to be the largest institute in the region in the field of medical research. He said the Punjab government was going to allocate 125 kanals to PGMI for the construction of a hostel and research laboratories.
He said that an American non-government organisation will donate $1 million to the PGMI for doctors’ training and research. He said the donation could help start a PhD programme within two months.
“The LGH will soon start providing cancer treatment,” he said. Intensive care units (ICUs) would also be setup in the neuro, medical and surgery wards, he said.
Dr Salahuddin said that the Planning and Development Department had approved Rs2.7 billion for the 500-bed Punjab Institute of Neuro Sciences.
Answering a question about dengue virus, Dr Salahuddin due to better planning and equipment this year, it would not affect the people in such large numbers as in the previous year.
