Environment tribunal: Federal law secretary asked to reply

Lack of judges has created a backlog of cases, says petitioner.

LAHORE:

The Lahore High Court (LHC) Chief Justice (CJ), Sheikh Azmat Saeed, on Tuesday sought a reply from the federal law secretary within three weeks on a petition seeking directions to appoint judges in four courts/tribunals. The CJ passed the order on a petition filed by Advocate Noshab A Khan.

Earlier, the petitioner submitted that the Punjab Environment Tribunal had become ineffective after its chairman retired on July 1, 2011 and 1,030 cases were pending before it.

He submitted that Customs, Taxation and Anti-Smuggling court had also become ineffective for the past two months and 250 cases were pending in it.

He said that the Banking (Offence) court was also without a judge and 1,000 cases were pending before it. He added that the Drug court had become ineffective for the past five months as a judge had not been appointed and 300 cases were pending before it.

The petitioner said that the federal law ministry appointed judges and presiding officers in these courts after getting the approval of the LHC chief justice but the ministry had not made any appointments.
