KARACHI:
Sunni Tehreek (ST) chief Mohammad Sarwat Ejaz Qadri said on Sunday that the organisation would contest the next general elections as a political party by the name of Pakistan Sunni Tehreek (PST). Its first public meeting would be at Minar-e-Pakistan in Lahore on March 23.
Qadri made the announcement while addressing the 'Pakistan Bachao 'Jan Nisaran-e-Mustafa Conference' organised by ST at Nishter Park. He added that prominent personalities would be joining the party and that they would be making important announcements at the gathering in Lahore.
At the conference, ST inducted prominent businessman and social activist Sabir Dawood as its new member.
Qadri said that the students wing of ST, Pakistan Islam Students Federation (PISF) had also opened its units in universities and colleges.
The participants at the conference included Amir Jammat Ahl-e-Sunnat Pakistan Allama Shah Turab-ul-Haq Qadri, Chief of Nizame-Mustafa Party Haji Hanif Tayyab, leader of JUP Shabbir Abu Talib, prominent ulema including Allama Rehan Ahmed Amjadi, Tariq Mehbob, Mufti Abid Mubarak and Allama Mufti Inayat-ur- Rehman Hazarvi.
Addressing the conference, the leaders called for the arrest of culprits involved in the Nishter Park bomb blast of April 11, 2006. Qadri added that if the killers were not arrested, ST would besiege the Governor House.
Earlier, Qadri had said that his party was still contemplating joining the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) and that the ST was yet to reach a consensus on the move.
“I cannot confirm as the executive council will decide but we will soon reach a positive decision and the nation will hear good news. We are pondering over all aspects for becoming the part of the movement lead by PTI,” he said.
The ST chairman had added that his party had also requested PTI Vice Chairman Shah Mehmood Qureshi to bless them with his generosity, leadership and guide the ST as part of an impending move to join the ‘tsunami’.
