Health Issues: Central drug regulating body suggested

The country lacks a central drug regulatory authority since devolution of the Ministry of Health to provinces.

LAHORE:

The Pharma Bureau has called for immediately constituting an independent and centralised Drug Regulatory Authority, modelled on bodies running in other nations, in order to oversee this very critical industry of the country.

In a statement, the representative body of multinational pharmaceutical companies, which are operating in Pakistan and associated with the Overseas Investors Chamber of Commerce and Industry, felt an urgent need of an independent regulatory authority to ensure welfare and safety of patients and to rebuild confidence of people in the pharmaceutical industry.

The country is lacking a central drug regulatory authority since devolution of the Ministry of Health to provinces following the 18th Constitution Amendment and the Pharma Bureau.

The matter has now become more urgent, especially in the light of recent deaths in Lahore due to drug reactions.
