Fertiliser sales decline 3% in 2011

Engro increases market share with help of new plant.

KARACHI:
Fertiliser sales declined by 3% to 8.4 million tons in 2011 as urea production fell due to gas outages while imports remain subdued.

Sales of urea – the highest consumed fertiliser – declined 3% to 5.9 million tons due to non-availability while sales of di-ammonia phosphate (DAP) – the second most consumed fertiliser – sales remained plummeted by 15% to 1.1 million tons primarily due to higher prices, says a research note released by Topline Securities.

On the other hand, sales of other fertilisers CAN, Nitro Phosphate and NPK posted a cumulative increase of 11% to 1.3 million tons mainly stemming from non-availability and higher prices of mainstream fertiliser products that forced farmers towards relatively cheaper alternatives.

Company-wise data reveals that Engro Corporation posted a staggering increasing of 33% in urea sales due to added production from its new EnVen plant while Fauji Fertilizer Company sales declined by 3%.

Moreover, fertiliser sales improved by 35%, with urea sales rising by 55% as better urea availability due to import of 331,000 tons during the month led farmers to build stocks before getting into peak winter season when most of the plants are expected to remain close due to gas curtailment.
