Policeman guns down truck driver in Peshawar

Truckers say man killed for refusing to pay bribe; police constable to face departmental inquiry.

PESHAWAR:
Police killed a truck driver on Friday for reportedly refusing to stop his vehicle for checking at the Ring Road in Pishtakhara area of Peshawar.

“Tawab Gul, a truck driver, was asked by Constable Nazir of the Special Police Force to stop his vehicle but the driver sped ahead,” SSP (operations) Tahir Ayub told The Express Tribune.

“He was chased and forced to stop his vehicle. However, after an exchange of harsh words, Nazir opened fire and killed Gul on the spot,” Ayub said.

Nazir has been arrested and will be facing department and legal procedures, the SSP said.

Meanwhile, other drivers said that Gul was killed for refusing to bribe the police. The drivers blocked the Ring Road in protest and chanted slogans against police. They demanded the chief justice to take notice of the incident.
