Buland Rana elected UNIDO’s external auditor

Pakistan has won election for three consecutive terms.

ISLAMABAD:
Pakistan has won election for external auditors of the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (Unido) for the third consecutive two-year term.

The 14th session of Unido’s general conference, held in Vienna from November 28 to December 2, 2011, elected the Auditor General of Pakistan, Muhammad Akhtar Buland Rana, as external auditor.

The election took place after withdrawal of Turkey, Spain, Ghana and the Ukraine.

Industries Secretary Aziz Ahmed Bilour led the Pakistan delegation and presented the candidature of the auditor general for re-election.

Speaking at a meeting of the Vienna Energy Forum, held before the election, Bilour said “this bid for re-election is in complete accord with the practice followed by Unido and important international organisations including the IAEA, UN and Unesco. Re-election of the auditor general of Pakistan will ensure a reasonable balance between the additional cost of changing the external auditor and the benefits of change.”

Unido, a UN agency which promotes industrial development and has 174 member states, has implemented 141 projects in Pakistan. It is currently working on 21 projects in diverse areas including trade capacity-building, SME development, women entrepreneurship, energy and environment.
