Bouncing Back: General Motors regains top seller spot
GM registered a 7.6 per cent increase in sales from 2010 and sold 9.026 million vehicles.
DETROIT/TOKYO:
General Motors (GM) has regained its title as the world’s top-selling automaker in 2011, less than three years since its bankruptcy and bailout in 2009. Its return to the top in world sales rankings comes as its rival and former number one, Toyota Motor Corporation slipped in rankings due to production holdups following the Japan earthquake and flooding in Thailand last year. GM registered a 7.6 per cent increase in sales from 2010 and sold 9.026 million vehicles, while Toyota lost 6 per cent in total vehicle sales over the same period to slip to number three in the rankings with 7.9 million vehicles sold. Volkswagen AG, the German auto giant vying for GM’s spot, currently ranks number two in the world with 8.16 million vehicles sold.
