World number one James Willstrop began the 2012 season with a first-round win at the Tournament of Champions. The Englishman beat Zac Alexander 11-7, 11-3, 11-4. Later, Willstrop was helped when two former world number ones in his half of the draw, Karim Darwish and Thierry Lincou, were beaten. Egypt’s Darwish missed a point for a two-game lead and was beaten 4-11, 13-11, 11-8, 11-5 by Britain’s Daryl Selby, while France’s Lincou lost 9-11, 11-5, 11-7, 11-7 to Marwanel Shorbagy, the world junior champion.
