Football: Chelsea fail to catch leaders

Torres’ drought continues in stalemate at Norwich.

LONDON:

Fernando Torres’ three-month goal-drought continued as Chelsea missed the chance to close the gap on the Premier League leaders with a 0-0 draw at Norwich.

Chelsea enjoyed the better chances of a scrappy game at Carrow Road but were left frustrated as £50million striker Torres drew a blank yet again. The draw left Chelsea in fourth place, five points adrift of third-placed Tottenham, who face leaders Manchester City at Eastlands today.

Rooney tells United to focus on Van Persie

Meanwhile, Wayne Rooney admitted Manchester United must stop in-form Arsenal striker Robin van Persie if the champions are to keep their title defence on track with a victory at the Emirates Stadium today.

Sir Alex Ferguson’s side romped to a remarkable 8-2 win over Arsenal in August but Rooney knows the Gunners are much-improved since that humiliation and the United striker believes van Persie, who has scored 20 goals since, has been the key to their revival.

While United need a victory to aid their title defence, Arsene Wenger would happily settle for finishing in the top four after his side made their worst start to a season for 58 years.

They go into the game in fifth place following successive defeats against Fulham and Swansea. And Wenger claims the prospect of missing out on Champions League should be all the motivation Arsenal need to avenge that Old Trafford embarrassment.
