KARACHI:

Another key character of the Karachi operation was ambushed, this time in Orangi Town area, to become the first police officer to be murdered in the year 2012.

Police sources told The Express Tribune that SI Asghar Ali Tarar, who was posted to the Special Investigation Unit (SIU), died on the spot when unidentified men on two motorcycles opened fire on his vehicle near Hyderi Imambargah in the limits of Mominabad police station on Thursday afternoon.

“He had a whole history of service since the time of the operation in 1996 to date,” said the duty officer, Sajid Hussain.

The 50-year-old sub inspector was working against terrorist and sectarian outfits. Police told The Express Tribune that at least nine prominent encounters and six arrests were to his credit during the operation, including those of Rasheed alias Negro, Zubair alias Burger, Kashif alias TT, Saeed alias Commando, Mubin alias Kala and Zahid alias Chota.

One by one over the years, nearly 150 policemen who took part in the 1992 and 1996 operations in Karachi, have been killed since that bloody chapter in Sindh’s history.
