As leaders go to court, PPP issues code of conduct for workers
No banners, chanting of slogans allowed inside courtrooms.
LAHORE:
As Pakistan Peoples Party leaders prepare to appear before the Supreme Court this week, a code of conduct has been issued to party workers who insist on attending proceedings.
Workers and legislators who want to be at the court to show their support cannot bring any banners and will not be permitted to chant slogans, PPP’s Parliamentary Leader in the Punjab Assembly Major retired Zulfiqar Gondal said on Wednesday.
He said the instructions had been issued on the directives of President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani.
“Only prominent members of the party’s Punjab chapter will be allowed to participate in court hearings while workers will be asked to wait and observe,” Gondal said. “Barrister Aitzaz Ahsan, Prime Minister Gilani and cabinet members will be present.”
He said that January 19, when Gilani is due to appear before the court, will show the stark difference between the attitudes of the PPP and the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz towards the Supreme Court. “The PML-N moved the court over the Memogate affair on the behest of the establishment.”
PPP Deputy Parliamentary Leader Shaukat Basra lashed out Punjab Law Minister Rana Sanaullah’s statement against PPP leader Babar Awan. “He [Sanaullah] should not have used such language against Awan.”
