RAWALPINDI:

The Sadiqabad police, with the help of bystanders, arrested two robbers on Saturday after they holed up in a house.

According to local residents and police, Zulqarnain and Raheel looted jewellery worth Rs500,000 from Shahbana Jewellers at Haroon Chowk and were later arrested from a nearby house where they were hiding.

“Two young men, both around age 30, held me at gunpoint and took away gold rings and bangles. As soon as they left my shop I started calling for help. Other shopkeepers heard me and pursued them. The robbers ran in to a nearby house, went to the roof, and jumped on to a neighbouring house,” said Aqeel Abbasi of Shahbana Jewellers.

The robbers started firing from inside the house while holding the residents hostage, he said.

However, by the time they tried to escape, the police had reached the scene and arrested them.

Some angry people managed to land blows on the suspects as the police was transferring them to the lock-up. The suspects received multiple head and other injuries, said a police official.

Sadiqabad Police Station House Officer (SHO) Inspector Karim Khan Niazi said both the suspects are residents of Chirah in Islamabad and have criminal records, with Zulqarnain having previously been accused of murder.

The SHO added that they had recovered two 30-bore pistols and the looted jewellery from the arrested men.
