SC judges playing lawyers: Asma

Former Supreme Court Bar Association president Asma Jahangir continues her criticism of the judiciary.

LAHORE:

With regards to the Memogate case, it appears that the Supreme Court judges are playing the role of lawyers, Supreme Court Bar Association’s former president Asma Jahangir said on Friday.

Speaking to The Express Tribune at the Sessions Court, Asma said she had read the decision of the apex court, which she thought reflected the role of judges in the Memogate case as lawyers. “If an institution is poised to send the government home, what can we do?” she questioned.

Responding to a question regarding the independence of the judiciary, Asma said she did not think the judiciary was merit-based.

The decision of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) will play a vital role in the continuation of the government, she said. Speaking to the media
later, Asma said that the Memo was not a public issue prior to the meeting between the Director General Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) and the central character behind the Memo, Mansoor Ijaz.
