Arms licenses: Federal government’s notification suspended

‘Is the government willing to consult the stakeholders?’.

LAHORE:

The Lahore High Court on Thursday suspended a federal government notification for computerisation of arms licences. Justice Farrukh Irfan Khan of LHC directed the government to inform the court as to whether they were willing to consult the stakeholders. The hearing was adjourned till January 27.

Barrister Syed Ali Zafar argued on behalf of petitioners and said that the arms licences were issued in the form of a booklet that contained pages covering all the aspects.

However, the notification for computerisation of these licences had been challenged on the ground that the federal government must consult the stakeholders and then make rules providing for all the aspects, which should be notified in the official gazette.

He said the petitioners were not against the computerisation, but the process should be clearly notified. The counsel argued that the rules had to be made by the Federation, but they had illegally authorised NADRA to formulate the rules.

The petition was filed by some licence holders who challenged the ad and notification issued by the federal government saying that all arms licences had been cancelled and new computerised licences were now being issued by NADRA.
