Football: ‘Suarez apology lamentable’

A leading anti-racism campaigner dismissed an apology from Luis Suarez as ‘lamentable’ for racially abusing Evra.

LONDON:
A leading anti-racism campaigner dismissed an apology from Luis Suarez as ‘lamentable’ following the Liverpool striker’s eight-match ban for racially abusing Manchester United defender Patrice Evra. “I can’t believe that a club of Liverpool’s stature can allow its integrity to be debased by such crass responses,” said Herman Ouseley, head of the FA-backed Kick It Out campaign. Suarez had earlier issued an apology for his behavior. “I admitted that I said a word in Spanish once and promised I won’t use it again on a football pitch in England,” he said. “I never used this word in a derogatory way and if it offends anyone then I want to apologise.”
