LAHORE: The Lahore High Court (LHC) on Tuesday disposed of a contempt of court petition against the Model Town assistant commissioner and Market Committee secretary for failing to obey court orders and ensure easy access to traders into the Kot Lakhpat fruit and vegetable market.

A local commission appointed by the court to verify claims that the walls had not yet been demolished, stated in its report that the grievance of the petitioners (traders) had been addressed. The walls erected on the market’s exit and entrance points, the commission noted, had been bulldozed.

The Model Town AC and Market Committee secretary also appeared before the court and undertook to comply with court’s orders in letters and spirit.

The traders of Kot Lakhpat market had contended that government officials were not following the court orders issued on Dec 27, 2011. The court had directed the respondents to demolish walls and reopen all entrance and exit points of the Kot Lakhpat market. Petitioners complained that the government did not open the ways of the market in violation of the court orders.
