Pracs: Rail workers protest after 105 sacked

PRACS, an ancillary of Pakistan Railways, protested on Monday after 105 contract workers were sacked.

LAHORE:

Employees of the Pakistan Railways Advisory and Consultancy Services (PRACS), an ancillary of Pakistan Railways, protested on Monday after 105 contract workers were sacked.

The fired workers, as well as their colleagues still in a job, held a protest in front of the City Railway Station after the decision was announced. Most of the lay-offs were of booking clerks and information centre representatives.

The workers closed the reservation and call centre at the station for half an hour and demanded that PRACS reverse its decision. They announced they would start a protest campaign on January 5 and would close all Pakistan Railways booking and reservation offices and information call centres in Pakistan. PRACS Managing Director Junaid Quraishi said that these workers had been hired for the Farid Express, but PRACS no longer needed them as Pakistan Railways had now taken control of the commercial management of the train.
