New Year’s grief: Two die, 60 injured while welcoming 2012

Another death put down to frenzied traffic.

KARACHI:
Even though the police imposed section 144 and shut down all ammunition shops a day before December 31, 2011, two people died while 60 were injured because of aerial firing. 

Intense aerial firing was reported in Lyari, where 18-year-old Imran Katchi, lost his life. He was standing outside his home when he was hit in the head by a stray bullet, said the police. He was taken to Civil hospital.

Another man died after being shot in Lyari.


Orangi Town, Nazimabad, North Karachi, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Federal B Area, Saddar, Keamari, Shah Faisal Colony and Gulistan-e-Jauhar were also rocked with gun fire. Dozens were injured and were rushed to hospitals.

According to police surgeon, Dr Hamid Padhiar, eight people were admitted in Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, 10 in Jinnah hospital while nine were taken to Civil hospital.

He said that around 60 people were injured all over the city and two of them died. Another man died on the road because of the traffic situation, he said.
