Steady Shabbir lifts Pakistan Open title

Ahmed finishes runner-up, Munir settles for third place.

KARACHI:
Pakistan’s top golfer Shabbir Iqbal delivered a consistent show on the final day to lift the Pakistan Open golf trophy at the DHA Country Club Golf Course yesterday.

Shabbir started the fourth and final day, having scored 69, 70, 71 and 72 in the first three rounds, and secured a gross 72 to claim the title. His aggregate of 282 from the four rounds proved to be the best.  The Islamabad-based golfer was content with his steady show.

“Winning is not easy and it takes a lot out of you,” said Shabbir. “Only luck doesn’t suffice, hard work is required to do well in such events.”

Lahore’s Matloob Ahmed, who finished as the runner-up, fired 71 for a total of 285. Seasoned golfer Mohammad Munir finished third after falling six shots behind Matloob, followed by Javed Inayat who had an aggregate of 293.

Meanwhile, Karachi’s Ali Hai won the amateur event, while Asghar Ali won in the senior professional category.
