Walk: Working women rally to Parliament House

Nearly 85% of women work in the informal sector, where they are paid only half of what their male counterparts make.

ISLAMABAD:

A walk to express solidarity with working women was organised by the Ministry of Human Rights from China Chowk to D Chowk to mark the National Day for Working Women on Thursday.

Women from all walks of life participated in the walk, which aimed to highlight economic, political and social achievements of working women in the country.

Speaking to the gathering, Senator Nilofar Bakhtiar stressed on the need for effective implementation of pro-women legislation.

National Commission on the Status of Women (NCSW) Chairperson Anis Haroon said, “Pakistan is experiencing [more and more women] its workforce and NCSW is proud to facilitate these women, who [did it] despite hurdles and obstacles.”

However, she added, a lot more needs to be done to empower women completely, since women’s participation in formal workforce is still low.

“Nearly 85% of women work in the informal sector, where they are paid only half of what their male counterparts make.

There is a dire need to secure their economic interests by introducing
and implementing relevant laws and policies,” she remarked.
