Tragedy: Constable electrocuted

Traffic police official was electrocuted while switching off a traffic signal’s button.

ISLAMABAD:

A traffic police official was electrocuted while switching off a traffic signal’s button at Godown Chowk on Friday.

The victim, Head Constable Gohar Rehman, a resident of Abbottabad, was performing his duty as a traffic warden at the crossing when he witnessed a massive traffic flow from of IJ Principal Road due to protests against gas loadshedding.

Scores of vehicles struck the crossing in long queues, allowing only a few vehicles to cross the signal due to its short timing, upon which Rehman decided to handle the traffic manually. As he approached the system installed at the roadside to switch off the signal, he was jolted by an electric current and fell unconscious on the ground. He was taken to a nearby hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead.
