FBR report: 29,000 NATO containers went missing, Senate told
Goods never crossed the Chaman border in Balochistan or the Torkham border in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa.
ISLAMABAD:
An internal inquiry by the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has revealed that around 29,000 containers bound for Afghanistan have gone missing in Pakistan – a significantly larger figure that the one mentioned in the report of the Federal Tax Ombudsman (FTO).
Minister of State for Production Khawaja Sheeraz informed the Senate on Thursday that a committee formed by the FBR chairman has found that as many as 28,822 containers carrying Nato supplies and Afghan Transit Trade goods left Port Qasim in Karachi, but never crossed the Chaman border in Balochistan or the Torkham border in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa.
According to FTO Dr Shoaib Suddle’s investigation into the case, which was taken up by the apex court, 7, 922 containers had gone missing.
The issue of missing Nato/Isaf containers had been raised in the House by Senator Ilyas Bilour of Awami National Party (ANP), who alleged that the National Logistics Cell was the main culprit. He further alleged that the trucks loaded at Port Qasim had been sold at Jodia Bazaar, Karachi.
