Revival of the MMA: Religious parties unite in MMA reformation
JUI, JI and others form a united front against ‘corrupt political parties’.

In a bid to beat ‘corrupt’ political parties and ‘save the ideology’ of Pakistan, the country’s religious parties have decided to revive the Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal (MMA).
In a meeting of top leaders on Wednesday in Lahore, it was decided that former Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) chief Qazi Hussain Ahmed will be appointed the new president, while Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rahman would act as secretary general of the coalition of religious parties.
A formal announcement is expected to be made before the year-end, according to a source familiar with the matter. Furthermore, all parties involved in the MMA will follow the declaration laid down by the coalition.
Former JUI Punjab chief Rasheed Ludhianvi confirmed the initiative and told The Express Tribune, “We want to get rid of the corrupt political ideologies of other parties and we want to save the ideology of Islam as well as people of Pakistan. The people of Pakistan have complete trust in us. We will stay united, and want to give a practical implementation of the dream of Iqbal.”
Leaders of different religious and political parties have been trying to unite on a single platform for the last six months to electorally challenge incumbent parties.
So far JI, Tehreek-e-Islami, Jamiat Ahle Hadith, and JUI are all part of the coalition. Party leaders have previously said that they are attempting to end all discrimination and differences between religious parties of Pakistan.
