Shopkeepers protest against murder of a trader

They claim that extortionists have been running riot in the area.

KARACHI:
The shopkeepers of the spare-parts market in the Garden area staged a protest on Wednesday to voice their anger over the killing of a 43-year-old trader, Ameer Ali.

They blocked the Garden Road, burnt tyres and chanted slogans against the law enforcement agencies. The angry shopkeepers said that law enforcers had failed to curb incidents of extortion and demanded that action be taken against extortionists, who have begun to attack them.

Ali was on his way home on Tuesday night when two armed men on a motorcycle intercepted him near a traffic signal on Garden Road. They opened fire on Ali and as a result, wounded him on the neck. He was taken to the Civil Hospital where he died.

Ali used to live in Patel Para and ran a battery shop in Garden area. The protestors claimed that he was killed by the extortionists after he refused to give them money. They said that such incidents have become very common but the authorities have not taken action or drawn up comprehensive strategies to secure their lives and properties.

Following the protest, a heavy contingent of the law enforcers reached the site of the demonstrations and dispersed the protestors peacefully.
