Pakistan breaks losing streak against Australia

Pakistan beat Australia by three wickets in the second and final Test match at Headingly.

LEEDS: Pakistan beat Australia by three wickets, on Saturday, in the second and final test match at Headingley, England, tying the series one all. This is Pakistan's first Test win against Australia in 15 years.

At the start of the fourth day Pakistan required 40 runs for seven wickets to reach the target of 180 and win the match.

Earlier, Australia were bowled out for 349 in their second innings, having made just 88 in their first.Pakistan made 258 runs in the first innings.

Imran Farhat and Azhar Ali were top scorers for Pakistan in the second innings with 67 and 51 runs respectively.

Pakistan, with such a brilliant cricketing history, should be ashamed that they havent been able to beat Australia for such a long duration of 15 years. We should stop underestimating ourselves and these celebrations should be reserved to bigger achievements like series whitewashes, world cup wins etc.

We need to start thinking as winners and have to start beleiving in ourselves. Although am not a big fan of Butt (either one !!) but Salman played really sensibily and lead the team really well. I agree with his sentiments to 'own the team' even if they are not always winning. Salman spoke confidently and deserve full marks on his attempt at PR !! Let us, as a nation, give our team little room to built on this success and give them our whole hearted support. Lets not be too judgemental and critical if the performance is not repeated. All the players have great potential and seem to be under good and (hopefully) a disciplined leader (I meant the younger Butt!!).. For for the time being let them savour this moment in history and keep on praying for bright and successful future.

Mohammed Arif | 14 years ago | Reply This is a collective effort and no doubt credit goes to our Bowlers. I will sugest all the bowlders to concentrate little bit on bating as well like Imran and Younas and Akram. As we need strong tale. I wish but to prolonge the victory.

I am very much impressed the way Sulman Butt gave his speech at present ceremony well spoken very confident speech first time after long time i heard this kind of speech from any pakistani captain. Mr.Ijaz Butt please get retired and leave your seat for some young and the person who have knowledge about cricket.

This victory should serve as a morale-booster and will prove to be a spring-board to get further resounding success in days to come. Pakistan team, hopefully, will be completely transformed and formidable unit in the forthcoming the test series against England. With this victory, my belief is further strengthened that Pakistan can beat any team in the world provided they play to their true potential. Our players are rich in natural talent. What they need most is self-assurance and mental toughness and sese of responsibility to bring good name and uphold the honour of our dear country.

tahir hamid | 14 years ago | Reply Though i m happy at pakistan winning the test match against australia but our batting is brittle esp. in test matches..therefore when we play our test matches against england we should play muhammad yusuf and younis khan to strengthen the batting department.

Good job by the team and especially the coaching staff of Waqar Younis, Ejaz Ahmed etc for instilling the "killer" instinct in the team that had been missing since the early 2000's. Waqar and Ejaz were the attacking players in some of the legendary Pakistan sides of the 80s and 90s, their experience from back then is obviously helping these youngsters.

All credit goes to bowlers. they rattled Aussies bating line and shot out them partly on 88 in first inning. The late burst of three quick wickets of Muhammad Amir in the middle of the second Aussies inning added Pakistan's cause further. However, the batting line of Pakistan is appeared to be as vulnerable as before. Except Azhar Ali, Imran Farhat and Salman Butt other senior batsman lacked application and concentration in longer version of the game. Hence, it needs reinforcement from some experienced and senior batsman like Yusuf and yunis to face the challange of England.
