Consensus: Industrialists, water board resolve tariff dispute

Representatives of seven town associations of the city agreed to pay Rs145 for every thousand gallons of water.

KARACHI:

Town associations and the Karachi Water and Sewerage Board (KWSB) on Monday agreed to a new tariff of Rs145 per thousand gallons of water, ending a weeks-long dispute between the two sides, an industrialist said.

Korangi Association of Trade and Industry (KATI) Chairman Ehtesham Uddin told The Express Tribune that representatives of seven town associations of the city agreed to pay Rs145 for every thousand gallons of water at a meeting at the Governor House.

“Water tariff will be the same for all kinds of industries including processing and non-processing units,” he said.

The dispute had emerged a few weeks ago after KWSB revised water tariff for all industries and set the new rate at Rs215 per thousand gallons, up from Rs119 per thousand gallons. However, the sudden increase of 82 per cent sparked an angry reaction from the industries.

A committee, headed by renowned industrialist Zubair Motiwala, came up with the mutually agreed water tariff on Monday in presence of Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ibad.
