Punjab government suspends local body elections

A bill in this regard will be presented today to the Punjab assembly for approval.

The Punjab government has once again suspended local body elections for an indefinite period of time, Express News reported on Monday.

A bill will be presented in this regard in the Punjab Assembly today for approval.


Former president Pervez Musharraf introduced the local government system, the constitutional duration of which ended on Novermber 30, 2009.

The Punjab government had later wound down the local bodies departments and had appointed administrators in place of elected representatives.

Since October 17, 2011 the tenure of administrators has been extended to one more year.
