Pakistan needs to cooperate more: Holbrooke

Holbrooke said Pakistan is cooperating with Afghan peace efforts but not to the extent sought by Washington.

LONDON:

US Special Envoy for Afghanistan and Pakistan Richard Holbrooke on Friday said that Pakistan is cooperating more with US-backed Afghan peace efforts but not to the extent sought by Washington.

Speaking during his visit to Britain, Holbrooke cited several areas of progress including a greater Pakistani military push against militants on its soil. However, he said the Haqqani network remains a 'real problem.'

He said without Pakistan's participation, the Afghan war could go on indefinitely.

The envoy said the emphasis right now is on reintegration efforts which look at persuading the Taliban to lay down their arms and participate in social development projects.
