ISLAMABAD:
To improve their services, national flag carrier Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) has hired a PhD holder for an important task - killing cockroaches on airplanes.

According to a report by Express News, the hiring was revealed by a PIA official during a session of the National Assembly Standing Committee on Defence held on Friday.

When the committee inquired about rats, cockroaches and lizards being seen on airplanes, the official said that the planes were being regularly fumigated with anti-insect sprays, but an expert had also been hired for the task.

The PhD-holder is said to have done research on the presence of cockroaches on planes and various other areas.

In the past, several PIA flights have made emergency landings due to the discovery of rodents and other insects inside the aircraft.

According to an estimate, US$ 1.2 million are spent for thorough checking of one aircraft.
