LAHORE:

The City District Government of Lahore (CDGL) has engaged a private firm to introduce a new digital parking system to curb overcharging by parking contractors, The Express Tribune has learnt.

The digital parking system will enable parking contractors to issue a ticket with vehicle number and park-in time through personal digital assistants (PDAs).

The contractors will then transfer the information to a central database through their PDAs, which will be regularly monitored. The Anti-Car lifting Squad of the Lahore Police would also be able to access the database to trace stolen vehicles in parking areas.

Iftikhar Alam Khan, the project manager of Punjab-China Techno Service, told The Express Tribune that the new system would be operational by June.

He said the digital parking system would be used in nine parking areas in Model Town, Shadman and Gulberg. He said the PDA devices are expensive but the parking contractors would be able to rent tem.

The pilot system is being tested currently in parking areas at the Town Hall and Liberty Market.
