Muharram: ‘Security lax at Bibian Pak Daman’

Rangers flag march today, pillion riding banned for two days.

LAHORE:
A Shiite leader has said there is insufficient security at the entrances for females at the Bibian Pak Daman shrine, a popular site in Muharram.

“The entrances for women are not properly guarded,” said Shehzada Ghulam Hassan Bhatti, the district president of Tehreek-i-Nifaz-i-Fiqh Jafria. “The policewomen are always either gossiping on sending text messages on their phone.”

Senior Superintendent of Police (Operations) Sarfraz Falki pledged to look into the complaint about the policewomen posted to the shrine.

Meanwhile, the Rangers did a rehearsal flag march on Sunday, ahead of the real thing on Monday, to demonstrate their emergency preparedness. A Rangers spokesman said that 11 companies would be on call in the province and four companies (around a thousand men in total) in the provincial capital on Muharram 9 and 10.

Processions

Pillion riding on motorbikes has been banned and police leaves cancelled for Muharram 9 and 10. People are not allowed on the rooftops or to stand near windows in houses along the route of the main processions.

Police said that 130 CCTV cameras have been placed along the main routes, including 55 at Islampura and cameras at Karbala Gamay Shah, linked to control rooms in the DCO office, the CCPO’s office, DIG (Operations) office and Divisions SPs for Coordination. An estimated 12,000 police personnel will be on security duty around the city.

CCPO Ahmed Raza Tahir issued a statement on Sunday urging people not taking part in processions to stay away from the areas.
