Celebrating UAE’s Independence Day

Nomi Ansari, Rabia Z and Shamaeel Ansari present their collections.

KARACHI:

To celebrate the independence of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), a ceremony was held on the evening of December 2, at the Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Compound, Karachi.  This event also marked the closing ceremony of the recently concluded UAE Expo ‘Magnificent Seven’ held at the Karachi Expo Centre.

The night saw culture being celebrated with fashion and music — three designers showcased their collections on the ramp while regional folk music and dances, including Punjabi bhangra, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa’s khattak dance and Baluchi makrani, were also a dominant feature of the evening.

On the ramp

Pakistani designer Nomi Ansari’s ‘Threads of Unity’ collection, which was primarily a bridal collection, mostly made use of black and red. Staying true to his signature style, Ansari used a lot of gold and silver work as well. His collection was complemented by a jewellery collection by Afroz Javeri.

Up next was Arab fashion designer Rabia Z’s ‘Mahawara Collection’ which was presented along with Nazneen Tariq’s jewellery collection. Rabia’s collection, predominantly in white and floral prints, consisted of head scarves, pants and shirts.

Lastly, Shamaeel Ansari showed her ‘Best of Pakistan’ collection which comprised of bridals and semi-formals. In velvet and silk, the collection boasted motif work and traditional embroidery. Shamaeel toyed with shades of orange and rust, as well as blacks and browns.

To add to the celebratory mood, the event was peppered with rock band Strings performing two of their greatest hits “Uski Zulfain Khuli” and “Hai Koi Hum Jaisa.”
