Ministry of External Affairs report finds 53 Pakistani nationals facing deportaion have filed for asylum in India.
NEW DELHI:
The Indian Ministry of External Affairs in submitting a detailed report on Pakistani prisoners in India has found that some of the prisoners do not wish to return, Times of India reproted on Saturday.
The report had been compiled and then submitted to the Indian Supreme Court which had asked the ministry to explain why deportation of Pakistanis was not expedited.
The report noted that 262 foreign prisoners were languishing in Indian prisons, 238 of them with deportation orders.
Of the prisoners, 53, Pakistani nationals including women and children, were demanding political asylum in India. They requested that they be treated as refugees after claiming they were "Mehdis".
The bench said, "In these matters, we have to be concerned about human rights. Technicalities must not come in the way of violation of these rights." However, it clarified, "We find most times the facts (given by petitioner) are unverified."
