While the talk of troubling times ahead for the government have been heard before, the country’s leadership is not taking the buzz lightly.
President Asif Ali Zardari vowed on Thursday to confront all challenges faced by the government with courage - and in private he warned his close associates about a ‘grave’ situation unfolding before the government. He went as far as to ask party members to begin preparations for general elections as a contingency plan – though the polls are, on paper, over a year away.
Hectic consultations, which had been taking place in the Presidency for the past few days, further intensified on Thursday after the Supreme Court passed a spate of orders in its first hearing of the Memogate petition – filed by leader of the opposition party, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N)
The apex court barred the country’s former envoy to the US from leaving, while a commission, headed by former FIA chief Tariq Khosa, investigates his role in the memogate affair.
Soon after the court announced its decision, the senior leadership of the PPP convened in the Presidency. The meeting was followed by a fiery joint press conference in response to the court’s decision. In what appears to be a reaction to the court’s decision, and the rumours of impending trouble for the government, the Presidency issued a statement in which President Zardari said that being a “spiritual son” of Zulifkar Ali Bhutto he knew how to confront all kinds of challenges and he would do so.
Addressing the nation and PPP workers in the statement, the president said that Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto had full trust in him and the nation should have faith in the trust reposed by her, spokesperson Farhatullah Babar quoted the president as saying.
“We were already aware of what was going to transpire … We already knew this since last night” a PPP leader who attended the meeting in the Presidency told The Express Tribune, referring to the court’s decision. The president has held a one-on-one session with over a dozen parliamentarians of the party in the past two days to consult them on the emerging situation.
On Thursday, the president and Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani also held a one-on-one meeting.
The president is also keeping the leadership of his coalition partners in the loop over the emerging scenario. Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) chief Altaf Hussain spoke to President Zardari on the phone on Thursday. According to a press release issued by the MQM, the two leaders “discussed the overall political and economic situation in the country and other important national issues.”
The president also met with president of Awami National Party Asfandyar Wali Khan and spoke to JUI-F chief Maulana Fazl-ur-Rehman on Thursday.
“President Zardari is a man of strong nerves. I have seen him anxious for the first time since we assumed power after 2008 polls,” a PPP leader said after meeting him, adding that the president hadn’t ruled out the possibility of early elections.
“Earlier the party had March in mind – for next year’s Senate elections. But now there is no timeline,” he quoted the president as saying.
In addition, a lawmaker who also met with the president, said that the Presidency had decided to set up a focal office to facilitate members in release of funds for development schemes, a sign that the party was possibly gearing up to contest elections earlier than expected. “The president has directed us to expedite development schemes. The government would provide its members all the necessary funds” the lawmaker said.

@khurshid: You should have done some research before coming out with biased contribution. No vvvip or vip treatment was given to Nawaz Shariff. Supreme Court of Pakistan is the only institution that has provided relief to the people of Pakistan while the government has shown incompetency in every field. Even the haj pilgrims have been targetted. The world is watching supreme court. Supreme Court is one of the pillars of the state and international jurists have thing but the praise for our supreme court. Even Advani could not resist talking about their impartial decisions and role while the disfunctional government continues to rule. Mush must be tried and don't rule that out. Let him come to Pakistan and then see what happens.
@shahid: @khurshid: I agree with you both. How can SC CJ a cousin of terrorist Rana Sana be neutral? Rana Sana has publically threatened Babar Awan as liable for murder. The same people who have attacked the SC while in session are accorded VVIP reception. This PCO court would have been fired and tried for aiding Mush's acts of treason when he first overthrew NS. As the time goes by Mush is proven right by throwing these judges in detention. Still neither NS nor SC has the moral courage to try Gen Mush but HH is an easy civilian target. An unelected NS and a paid govt servant are subverting the elected govt. Regards, Mirza
some unique features of nawaz sharifs appearence before the "impartial" judiciary and the Court's behavior. He was accorded a VVIP reception by court staff. since when have plaintiffs been accorded such status? He was allowed to present his case individually despite not being a lawyer what to say supreme court lawyer. How did he manage to respond to court technical questions, or were there no such questions before the Court came with up with its momentous decision? How can the Cheif Justics sit on a bench to hear the case filed by his benefactor who had him restored to his position? Is this within the accepted practices of higher judiciary? How could the SC make such remarks during hearing that amounted to accepting all the media version of the so-called memogate scandal? How could the court reason that an unsigned memo sent by Mansoor Ejaz (US national) was grave threat to our security without waiting for it to be first authenticated?
If Govt has no hand in the memo then they should not be afraid of it. In my opinion PPP's press conference last night showed clearly that they are guilty of memogate, right or wrong you be the judge.
the way this judicial comission has been made, seems a little unfair.a former prime minister went to the supreme court and all they could find was a former FIA man.this memo should be named kARGIL-MEMO.come on guys this is a disgrace how helpless our civil govts are.democracy must prevail.
The country is going from bad to worse under the present political set-up.There is corruption, bad governance and bad leadership.
There has to be an urgent change in the ruling set-up. Look at the economic mess $ is at Rs 89 today. There is no FDI.
We will never see progress with such leaders. Nawaz Sharif included.
Are all the cases left for PPP and its leadership....one after another...i am not a PPP supporter but can see the vindictiveness, biase, and prejudice of the Supreme Court against PPP and it leadership.
Sad but true
@Ammad: Nice, very nice. Thoroughly enjoyed your 'nip in the bud.' Salams Ammad.
To be honest, this is not the first time that government has found herself in this situation. But hatz off to Zardari's golden rule, "there are neither friends and foes, nor principals in politics", I am convinced that he will save the day. What makes zardari been able to hold on despite his bad raputation is that 1) he has not kept himself rigid. 2) he has kept everystake holder happy. Kayani got an extension,He never made any interference in the military affairs, Keep the coallation running despite MQM leaving it twice only to join back (due to flexibility of zardari). He is determined to complete his term. And looking at the history of recent government, there is every reason to believe that he will.
@F Khan: I smell something logical here ..:)
the last night statments by ppp leader ships shows that they are no more interested in pakistan unity but they just want to remain in power. This is very unfotunate move to destroy pakistan and its institutions. I pray for the unity and prospirty of pakistan. (pakistan zinda bad)
@Rehan: Talking about democracy, responsibility, and PTI teenagers; by the way, Mr. Bilawal Zardari was also a teenager when he was made the chairman of PPP. Thanks for giving us the most experienced and wisest people to lead this poor nation!
@Rehan: I respect your views but by the way who gave you the right to decide that all tolerant, moderate, liberal, federation-loving people are only from ppp and every one on the blog is a PTI-fan.A lot of pakistanis who are not ppp-fan could still have traits as you have described. No political party or political belief can claim ownership to them.
Next govt will be a coalition of two parties: Pakistan Judicial Movement (PJM) and Jamat-i-General Bin Qasim (JMQ). No need for your votes.
What happened in SC today seemed like a special episode of Big Brother.NFP
I do not like Zardari but this is what I will never like that he is removed out by any unconstitutional (ultra constitutional) means. Why to make someone a martyr when everyone on the villages, towns and cities knows that he can never win a fair coming election with his performance.Give him another one year and beat him at the ballot.I have full faith in my countrymen that they will vote correctly and intelligently. We do not want a judicial or military coup.IA we will kick this coalition out with our vote power.
Keep conspiring against the PPP, and we'll still continue to defeat you. You know why? Because the majority of Pakistan is tolerant and moderate and federation-loving. We see Pakistan as one, strong, liberal, loving of its neighbors, pro-west, women's-equality-respecting nation. And that's how the majority sees it. Not some teenage PTI-fan sitting on his computer with little understanding of Pakistani politics. So, keep conspiring. Because in the end you will fail. Jeay BB. Regards, Rehan
Why is zardari so afraid of memo gate investigation and the SC ?
Zardari is a bogus man like most other PPP people.
