HYDERABAD:

The Sindh High Court stayed the levy of a fuel-adjustment surcharge on electricity bills, collected by the Hyderabad Electric Supply Company (Hesco), on Wednesday after hearing a petition by the ice factories.

The circuit bench issued notices to the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority chairman, Hesco CEO and commercial manager, and other officers for December 15.

The 47 ice factories, including 25 in Hyderabad and 22 in Jamshoro, said that they were being charged Rs1.04 per unit for June and Rs2.04 for July. Their counsel, advocate Irfan Ahmed Qureshi, told the court that the Lahore High Court and the SHC Sukkur bench had also struck down the fuel-adjustment surcharge.

The SHC ordered the factories to pay their current bills, excluding the surcharge.
