No haste: Justice Saeed speaks against judicial policy again
Says judicial system must be in public interest, not govt interest.
LAHORE:
The Lahore High Court chief justice and the Lahore Bar Association criticised the judicial policy once again on Saturday, saying that while settling cases the objective should be decisions based on merit.
Justice Sheikh Azmat Saeed was speaking at a reception arranged by the Punjab Bar Council (PBC).
Justice Saeed also said that the judicial system needed to function in the people’s best interest, not according to the aspirations of the government.
“The people do not want judges who keep on trying to get appointed as government executives,” he said.
The chief justice asked lawyers to help him in ensuring justice, “I cannot resolve the problems alone, not without your help” Justice Saeed said.
“We have to make a long term policy to resolve the problems of litigants. We should not work just to dispose cases but to decide the cases on merit,” he said.
Before the chief justice, Lahore Bar Association president Shahzad Hassan Sheikh also criticised the judicial policy and said that justice should be dispensed on merit not according to any policy. He warned of a reaction from lawyers if “capable and noble senior lawyers” were not elevated as judges of the Lahore High Court.
