Logistics, security issues delay oil, gas projects

Conference discusses energy challenges, country’s potential reserves.

ISLAMABAD:
OMV executive board member Jaap Huijskes, while highlighting the perception of a foreign company working in Pakistan, said on Tuesday logistics and security concerns delayed response of joint partners to oil and gas exploration.

However, at the same time the Austria-based exploration company’s board member acknowledged the reserves potential of Pakistan, which if explored was ample to meet energy challenges and create opportunities for all.

He was speaking at a two-day Annual Technical Conference 2011 inaugurated here on Tuesday, where industry professionals as well as students discussed the challenges faced by the country in meeting energy demand.

The conference was organised by Pakistan chapter of the Society of Petroleum Engineers and Pakistan Association of Petroleum Geoscientists (PAPG). This year’s theme is “energy security through indigenous resources” in the face of current energy crisis.

Petroleum Secretary Muhammad Ejaz Chaudhry said Pakistan needed to discover more oil and gas to cope with mounting challenge. “The government looks forward to the recommendations emerging from the technical sessions, which will be incorporated into the exploration and production policy,” he said.

PAPG Chairman Moin Raza Khan said shale gas revolution in North America was a great example of how technology had been applied to unlock a difficult resource.

“Over the next few years, we will hear much more about the role of technology and how innovations in exploiting unconventional reserves can unlock resources earlier considered as stranded and impossible,” he said.

Conference participants agreed that energy security demanded close coordination among all stakeholders.
