YDA flares up as doctor threatened by LHW’s husband

Demand the termination of the lady health worker, give police 48 hours to take action.

ISLAMABAD:

Young doctors in Rawalpindi rural areas on Saturday gave the police 48 hours to take action against the husband of a Lady Health Worker (LHW) for attacking a Basic Health Unit (BHU) in Chappar in Rawalpindi and threatening a doctor.

Dr Muhammad Ali, who works at the Chappar BHU as a medical officer and also heads five government-run health programmes in the area, accused LHW Nazreen Akhtar’s husband Muhammad Rafaq of attacking the health unit and threatening him.

Ali said Rafaq came with about 30 “armed” men. In the FIR at Rawat Police Station, Ali named Rafaq, Mansoor and Qaiser as the ones who led the attack. Ali told The Express Tribune that Rafaq’s wife had failed to perform her assigned duty during the mother and child week. “When I called her home, her husband picked up the phone and started abusing me. He then came over to the BHU with his partners and beat me and the gatekeeper up,” he said.

Rafaq accused Anwarul Haq, the gatekeeper, for telling lies to the doctor about his wife not doing her work.

Rafaq said when he got a call from the doctor he went to meet him and explain the situation. Haq, however, would not let him through, which led to a quarrel between the two. Rafaq said the armed men were with Haq and not him. Haq, the gatekeeper, however said Akhtar was assigned to work with him for two days; however, she did not show up on the first day, prompting Dr Ali to call her home.

YDA Rawalpindi Rural Wing Spokesperson Dr Imran Younus said they have called an emergency central council meeting to address the issue. “We are demanding immediate termination of Nazreen Akhtar and for a fair inquiry into the case and immediate action.”
