Safety issues: Punjab asked to revive food authority

Conference participants pointed out that 40%of crops were damaged in post-harvest process

FAISALABAD:
Experts have called on the Punjab government to revive the provincial Food Authority and appoint a professional as chairman for monitoring and regulating food safety issues. They were speaking at the concluding session of an international conference titled “Emerging issues in food safety”, organised by the National Institute of Food Science and Technology (NIFSAT) of University of Agriculture here on Thursday. NIFSAT Director General Professor Dr Faqir Muhammad Anjum and US agricultural scientist Professor Dr Gleyn Edward Bladsoe from the University of Idaho presented recommendations. Conference participants pointed out that 40%of crops were damaged in post-harvest process, making it imperative to provide improved storage facilities and better post-harvest management systems for perishable commodities.
