‘Don’t leave till your boss arrives’
DPO promises irate judge he will produce Maryam by Friday.
LAHORE:
Justice Mazhar Iqbal Sidhu of the Lahore High Court on Tuesday made Okara city circle DSP and an SHO sit in the court for several hours after they told the judge that they had failed to recover the woman who married a traffic warden of her own free will and has been allegedly detained by her family.
The judge ordered both police officers not to leave the courtroom and summoned the Okara DPO.
“A TV channel had aired the woman’s telephone interview and the police are making lame excuses,” the judge said and adjourned the hearing till the arrival of DPO. The DPO reached the court eventually and undertook that he would produce the woman by Friday.
The judge adjourned the hearing till November 18 and allowed the police officers to leave with the DPO.
Traffic warden, Humayun Shahzad, filed a habeas cuprous petition for the recovery of his wife Maryam Lashari.
The petitioner pleaded that he and Maryam got married against the will of her family three years ago. Later, elders of her family agreed to send her with the petitioner after a few days.
But they backed out of their promise and detained her. He said the girl’s brother Dr Usman Lashari, sister Dr Amina Lashari and his brother-in-law, Hassan Farooq Wattoo had tortured her and were pressing her to get a divorce.
