PAC seeks details of outstanding taxes
ABBOTABAD:
The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Assembly has directed the Excise and Taxation (E&T) department to prepare district-wise details of outstanding dues from financial year 2000-01 on account of different taxes including property, motor vehicle, professional and hotel tax.
The PAC meeting, which was held at the Frontier House on Tuesday, ordered the department to take strict measures for the recovery of outstanding Rs39 million.
The department also has to submit a compliance report to PAC by September 30 along with annual details of reconciled amount recoverable in each district.
The Director General Audit Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, Javed Iqbal, suggested seeking annual receipt reports from the department so as to enable the committee to fix responsibility for ignoring recovery of huge amounts from tax evaders.
The committee directed the departments concerned to recover Rs5.79 million, the 15 per cent provincial government share in property tax collected by Cantonment Boards in four cities of the province which included Peshawar, Nowshera, Abbottabad and Mardan.
The committee called for making efforts for the early recovery of Rs5.326 million from 87 hotels of the province, mostly situated in Mansehra district.
PAC found that the district officers concerned did not initiate any penal action against defaulters and put on notice the officers for giving reasons for not collecting the amount outstanding since long. The committee was told that Rs38.99 million of provincial taxes were still recoverable from the defaulters. Out of this amount, a huge Rs31.77 million was payable only by property owners while the remaining Rs7.22 million was outstanding against motor vehicle owners as well as other provincial governments.
