Provincial elections: Who’ll be ANP’s next top leader?
Bashir Jan and Rana Gul Afridi are competing for the post of general secretary.
KARACHI:
As the Awami National Party (ANP) provincial elections draw to an end, sources claim that Shahi Syed will be re-elected as president and Bashir Jan will be the next general secretary.
The party’s Sindh chapter election commission chairman Muhammad Altaf Khan said that they had completed the first phase of the elections which were held at the ward levels. He added that everything should be wrapped up latest by November 20. While answering a question about Shahi Syed and Bashir Jan’s unopposed nomination, Khan said that he could not confirm anything as they had not received any nomination forms as yet. He added that Bashir Jan and Rana Gul Afridi were competing for the post of general secretary but could not comment on who would most likely win.
While talking to The Express Tribune, ANP Sindh President Shahi Syed said that the Pakhtuns of Karachi needed shelter and they got it from the ANP.
“In the last couple of years the party has established its presence in the province, especially Karachi,” he said. “This might be one of the reasons that there has been an increase in the number of members this year.”
Membership drive
The party claims that nearly 300,000 people joined them during their membership drive from April 15 till September. Khan told The Express Tribune that the party membership had increased in the last four years. “The party performed well on a provincial level,” he said. “Given Karachi’s law and order situation, the people were encouraged to join the ANP.”
The ANP holds a membership drive every four years throughout the country. This is then followed by inter-party elections held in accordance with its constitution. The membership drive continues for three consecutive months but this year it was extended because of the floods and Ramazan.
