Pakistan Basketball Federation formed
The Pakistan Basketball Federation (PBBF) has been formed after two rival groups joined hands.
LAHORE:
The Pakistan Basketball Federation (PBBF) has been formed after two rival groups joined hands, to finally pave way for an undisputed body for basketball after ten long years of disagreements. The newly-formed body has received a vote of confidence from all of the sport’s affiliated units that include four provinces and six departments. However, it is yet to be recognised by the Pakistan Sports Board (PSB) and Pakistan Olympics Association (POA).
“The purpose of the meeting is to acknowledge that all the true basketball lovers, who wanted to revive the game, are here on one board, as one unit, and so now we will go to the POA and the PSB for recognition,” said Rashid Ali Malik in a press conference. Malik, under whom the federation was formed, has been elected as the body’s president.
“And even if they do not recognise this federation, we will continue to hold basketball events and we will not approach the court to embark on legal proceedings,” said Malik.
According to Malik, all the sport’s affiliated departments gave a signed letter by their respective head officials confirming their support. “We have 100 per cent attendance by every affiliated unit, who have unanimously given this body a vote of confidence.”
Previously, the sport was not united because of a dispute among three individuals - Khalid Bashir, Madood Jafri and Naseem Butt. However, Bashir and Jafri decided to come together under the PBBF.
“For the larger interest of the game, an undisputed body should be formed to save the game from getting ruined,” said Bashir, who is now the federation’s secretary and had previously been running his own federation. Similarly, Jafri, who was earlier heading a basketball association at the district level, has been named as PBBF’s selection committee member.
