6.3 magnitude earthquake jolts parts of Punjab, KP, AJK

A 6.3 magnitude earthquake jolted the federal capital and various areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Upper Punjab and Azad Jammu and Kashmir, reported Express 24/7 on Tuesday.

In Punjab, the earthquake was felt in Hafizabad, Mandi Bahauddin, Phalia, Malkwal, and Pindi Bhatian, while in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the areas hit by the earthquake include Attock, Muzzaffarabad, Battgram, Pind Dadin Khan, Chakwal and Tila Gang.
The tremors were also felt in Haripur, Manshera, Dir, Batt Khela, Chitral and Malakand.
Earlier on the 6th anniversary of the 2005 earthquake that ravaged north of the country, Oxfam, an international non-government organisation, expressed its concerns saying that the commitments made by the government in 2005 to ensure better preparation for natural disasters will not be met by the deadline of 2015.
The organisation stated in the press release that more needs to be done to implement the Hyogo Framework for Action (HFA). In 2005, 168 governments agreed to adopt the HFA to commit to strengthening people’s resilience to disasters.
Oxfam called on the Pakistani government and donors to respond to the dire humanitarian needs and invest in disaster prevention measures to ensure that similar situation do not arise in the future.
