Movie time: What are you watching this Eid?
Rana plays the lead role in Eid releases Thakur 420 and Dane Pe Dana.
LAHORE:
Moammar Rana is Lollywood’s golden boy; he has been one of the most regularly casted lead actors and has thoroughly enjoyed the Lollywood limelight. The multitalented actor has the rugged looks to play action roles as well as the charisma to play romantic ones.
Rana’s charm led him to star in all the three major films which were released on Eidul Fitr at the end of August — Bhai Log, Jugni and Love Mein Ghum. Come this Eid (Eidul Azha) and the Lahore-based actor will be following up the hat-trick by appearing in Masood Butt’s Thakur 420 and Syed Noor’s Dane Pe Dana.
Thakur 420, Masood’s 88th directorial venture, is being produced by Ghafoor Butt, who is making a comeback after the box office failure of Khamosh Raho that starred Shaan and Juggan Kazim.
The film was shot in just over a month in various locations in Lahore. The story of Thakur 420 revolves around three men who try to swindle a rich girl and get her to fall in love and marry one of them. The girl, played by Nargis, has two requirements for her potential husband: he should be able to defend her honour and he should be honest.
Rana, on the other hand, plays the role of an honest man who is convicted of murder, which he committed to defend his family’s honour. Circumstances take such a course that the two — Rana and Nargis — fall in love. Soon after, the three swindlers try to mislead Rana by intruding in his personal matters, creating misunderstandings between him and Nargis.
“We got a real boost by including Nargis and Rana because they are very professional and capable,” said Masood. “Rana is very passionate and he was suitable for the role. Meanwhile, Nargis had a demanding role but she was the best fit because the character was required to look young and modern.”
Masood added that the film is commercial, aimed at meeting the demands of the audience who are seeking entertainment. “There will be songs, dances, comedy and action as we tried to include everything in it for the audience,” said Masood.
Meanwhile, the other Eid release Dane Pe Dana — a mix of crime, comedy and love — revolves around three criminals. Rana, an honest police inspector, while trying to arrest the criminals falls in love with their sister played by Saima. The story of Dane Pe Dana, according to members of the cast and production insiders, has borrowed from three Indian films Singham, Welcome and Dabangg. “This is the age of formula films that tend to copy Bollywood,” said a member of the production team who wished to remain anonymous.
However, although the films have a star-studded cast, one issue with both the films is that they have been shot within two months and that could mean they have compromised on quality. Only time can tell whether the directors of these films can cash in on the occasion and get the desired returns.
