Poverty: PBTE driver sets himself on fire

The driver had said that he had no right to live if he “can’t give happiness to his children, especially on Eid.”

A man working as a driver at the Punjab Board of Technical Education (PBTE) committed an act of self-immolation on Saturday, after he failed to provide for his family.

A resident of Mughalpura, Saleem was shifted to the hospital immediately after the incident. The doctors said he was in critical condition.

Chairmain PBTE Dr Shafiq said that fire had burnt 50% of Saleem’s body.


Dr Shafiq revealed that the driver, a father of two, would keep saying that he had no right to live if he “can’t give happiness to his children, especially on Eid.”

However, Dr Shafiq said that salary payments in his department were relatively better than other departments and that the workers additionally receive a bonus thrice in a year.

Earlier on Octover 25, Raja Khan, a father of two from Naushehro Feroz in Sindh, set himself on fire in front of Parliament House in Islamabad and succumbed to the burns at the hospital.
